What are dry wipes (nonwoven wipes)?

Dry wipes (nonwoven wipes) are single-use or reusable, absorbent cleaning cloths made by mechanically, thermally, or chemically bonding fibers together rather than weaving them into yarns. Unlike standard tissue paper, they do not dissolve in water. They offer the soft texture of a textile with the convenience of a disposable wipe.

Key Characteristics

  • Zero Pre-Saturation: They are manufactured dry, giving you the flexibility to add your own water, cleansers, biocide, or specific formulas right before use.
  • High Durability: Unlike standard paper towels, they maintain their structural strength when wet and resist tearing.
  • Low Linting: Engineered to release very few loose fibers, which prevents smudging and contamination during sensitive tasks.

Common Materials Used

Nonwoven wipes are typically crafted from blends of natural and synthetic fibers to achieve different performance traits:

  • Viscose (Rayon): Derived from wood pulp; highly absorbent and exceptionally soft.
  • Polyester: Adds strength, durability, and solvent-resistance.
  • Cotton: Provides natural softness and eco-friendly biodegradability.
  • Wood Pulp: Often used in industrial nonwovens for its sponge-like ability to soak up fluids quickly.
  • Airlaid:

Compared with normal wet-laid paper and tissue, air-laid paper is very bulky, porous and soft. It has good water absorption properties and is much stronger compared with normal tissue.

Popular Applications

Dry wipes are highly versatile and span several industries:

  • Healthcare & Personal Care: Heavily utilized in hospitals and care homes for sensitive continence care, full-body patient washing, and baby hygiene.
  • Industrial & Cleanrooms: Used in aerospace, electronics, and laboratories to wipe up solvents, oils, and inks without leaving lint or causing static.
  • Household & Beauty: Used as everyday makeup remover pads, disposable face towels, and multi-purpose heavy-duty cleaning cloths.
