Why Are Nonwoven Fibers Used to Make Wipes?

Nonwovens are used to manufacture wipes because they offer an optimal balance of high absorbency, excellent wet strength, and low manufacturing costs, making them particularly well suited to single-use products. Unlike woven materials, which require yarn to be spun and then woven, nonwovens are manufactured directly from fibers.

This direct manufacturing process makes it possible to achieve specific performance characteristics tailored to personal care, medical, and industrial applications.

  • High absorbency: The fiber network, designed to be open and porous, quickly absorbs and retains liquids, oils, or specific chemical solutions.
  • Excellent wet strength: Wipes maintain their structural integrity and resist tearing, even when fully saturated with liquid.

Main Manufacturing Processes

The characteristics of a wipe depend in particular on how its fibers are assembled:

  • Spunlace (hydroentanglement): High-pressure water jets entangle the fibers without the use of chemicals. This process creates a very soft, fabric-like texture, making it particularly popular for baby wipes and makeup remover pads.
  • Meltblown: Molten polymers are extruded into extremely fine fibers to form a dense web. This process provides excellent filtration properties and is particularly suitable for applications such as removing industrial grease or manufacturing disinfectant wipes.
  • Chemical / thermal bonding: Heat or environmentally friendly adhesives are used to bond the fibers together, providing greater rigidity and enhanced structural strength. This method is commonly used for wipes and scrubbing pads intended for demanding applications.

Fiber Composition

Wipes are rarely made from a single material. Manufacturers combine different types of fibers to achieve the desired properties:

  • Polyester / Polypropylene: Synthetic fibers that provide durability, mechanical strength, and tear resistance.
  • Viscose / Wood Pulp: Plant-based cellulose fibers used to maximize liquid absorption and retention.
